Masters in Urban Planning Program Rankings

Masters in urban planning programs combine education in areas such as architecture, public policy, environmental science, engineering, and more. Urban planning is a relatively new field, so your college options are more limited than in fields like business or nursing, but there are still many great colleges to consider. Here are a few of the best:

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

One of the publications that ranks urban planning schools is Planetizen. As of 2009, Planetizen ranked Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as the top school for graduate students interested in urban planning. This school has long been ranked as one of the top schools in math and science, so it makes sense that they would also have an amazing urban planning program. Admission into this program is extremely competitive, though once you’ve been admitted, you’ll have access to some of the best lectures, research facilities, and internship programs.

University of California at Berkeley

Like MIT, Berkeley is one of the top graduate schools for students interested in math and science fields. This program, which was developed by the Department of Urban Design, requires you to have an architecture background, and you’ll study topics such as landscaping, city planning, and infrastructure. This program was ranked as the second best for urban planning graduate degree students by Planetizen.

University of Southern California

Another top-ranked program for graduate students interested in urban planning is the one offered by the University of Southern California. At the school, students actually can choose from one of five specialties: economic development, preservation and design of the built environment, social and community planning, sustainable land use planning and transportation and infrastructure planning.

Other Top Programs

MIT and Berkeley aren’t the only two programs you should consider. Some other top schools for graduate students in urban planning include the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Rutgers State University of New Jersey, the University of Illiois at Urbana-Champaign, the University of Pennsylvania, Harvard University, and Cornell University. When comparing programs, make a list of the things that you want most out of a graduate program and visit as many schools in person as possible. Remember, the top program for you isn’t necessarily the best program as ranked by any publication.
